Application of ferrosilicon

(1) ferrosilicon used as deoxidizer and alloy agent in steelmaking industry.In order to obtain steel with qualified chemical composition and ensure the quality of steel, deoxidation must be carried out in the final stage of steelmaking. The chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is very large, so ferrosilicon is a strong deoxidizer used for precipitation and diffusion deoxidation in steelmaking.The addition of a certain amount of silicon to the steel can significantly improve the strength, hardness and elasticity of the steel, so ferrosilicon is also used as an alloying agent in the smelting of structural steel (0.40-1.75%), tool steel (0.30-1.8%), spring steel (0.40-2.8%) and transformer silicon steel (2.81-4.8%).
In addition, in the steel-making industry, ferrosilicon powder is often used as a heating agent for ingot caps to improve the quality and recovery of ingot, because it can give off a lot of heat at high temperature.

(2) used as inoculant and spheroidizer in cast iron industry.Cast iron is an important metal material in modern industry, it is cheaper than steel, easy to melt smelting, has excellent casting properties and much better than steel shock capacity, especially ductile iron, its mechanical properties or close to the mechanical properties of steel.The addition of certain amount of ferrosilicon in cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides in iron and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite. Therefore, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant (helping to precipitate graphite) and spheroidizer in the production of ductile iron.

(3) used as reducing agent in ferroalloy production.Not only the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is great, but also the carbon content of ferrosilicon is very low.Therefore, high silicon ferrosilicon (or silicon alloy) is a kind of reductant commonly used in the production of low carbon ferroalloy in ferroalloy industry.
(4) other USES.Ground or atomized silica iron powder can be used as suspension phase in mineral processing industry.It can be used as the coating of welding rod in the manufacture of welding rod.Ferrosilicon is used in the chemical industry to make silicone and other products.
Among these USES, the steelmaking, foundry and ferroalloy industries are the largest users of ferrosilicon.Together they consume more than 90% of ferrosilicon.In various brands of ferrosilicon, the most widely used is currently 75% ferrosilicon.In the steel-making industry, about 3-5kg75% ferrosilicon is consumed for every 1t of steel produced.
